Trading resumed in New Market after two days

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 22: After the violent clash between the students of Dhaka College and the shopkeepers of New Market in the capital, the traders accepted the 10-point demand of the students and trading in the market was resumed from Thursday morning.

Most of the shops in New Market are open after being closed for two consecutive days. Eid shopping has started from Thursday and the presence of buyers has been noticed since morning.

Meanwhile, Mahbub Alam, a teacher representative of Dhaka College, said this at a press conference after a meeting held at the Science Laboratory at 4 am on Thursday.

Mahbub Alam said the shops have been open since Thursday morning. Dhaka College will also run normally. The businessmen have accepted the 10-point demand of the students. A cell consisting of teachers, students and businessmen will be formed. This cell will work to solve the problem(s) in future. The business owners' association will compensate all the injured including journalists.

It is learned that a meeting was held at 12 am on Wednesday at the Science Laboratory in the capital to resolve the stalemate that has been going on for the last two days. It was attended by teachers' representatives of the college, student representatives (4 people), business leaders, representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Education. The meeting lasted till 1 am.

Earlier, the students of Dhaka College raised a 10-point demand in a press conference after a clash with businessmen. The press conference was held at Dhaka College around 11:30 pm on Wednesday. Sujoy Bala and Masum Billah, postgraduate students of Dhaka College, spoke at the press conference on behalf of the general students.

The demands of the students were to ensure exemplary punishment by identifying the instigators, instigators and assailants of the vicious attacks on the students through investigation. The Newmarket Business Association and law enforcement will be responsible for treating all injured students. The family of Nahid, a courier service worker killed after allegedly being attacked by hawkers during the clash, must be properly compensated. The attackers on the ambulance carrying the patients have to be identified and brought under the law by watching the video footage. The DC, ADC and OC of Newmarket police station should be withdrawn and the police administration should apologize to the college administration. CCTV should be installed in every market and shop. Code of conduct for officers and employees should be formulated and implemented in each market. Restoration of occupied sidewalks, eviction of illegal car parking and extortion must be stopped.
