Two passengers arrested at Shahjalal Airport while smuggling foreign currency

Dhaka, October 30: Airport Armed Police have arrested two passengers while they were trying to smuggle Saudi riyals at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday morning. They tried to go to Bahrain with Saudi Riyal worth 1 crore 40 lakh taka. Airport Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ziaul Haque confirmed the information to BSS.

The arrested passengers are Jewel (36) of Brahmanbaria district and Golam Rabbani (46) of Comilla district.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ziaul Haque said they were trying to reach Bahrain on a Gulf Air flight at 5:40 am on Friday. From there they would have travelled to Dubai. Airport Armed Police arrested the two of them from inside the holding lounge. At that time, six lakh Saudi riyals were recovered from their luggage( about one crore and 40 lakh Bangladeshi taka). They are monitored on the basis of intelligence information.

Ziaul Haque said they were waiting to board the flight with the luggage booked. The money was found by searching their luggage from the aircraft. They hid those at the bottom of the luggage. During the preliminary interrogation, they said that they were trying to smuggle the money to Dubai. These two travel regularly. They travel to Dubai every week. The money may be used for the purpose of smuggling gold.
