Dhaka, April 7: BNP and Awami League lawyers clashed, chased each other and protested over counter iftar party at the Supreme Court Lawyers Association. The incident took place between the lawyers of both sides at the designated place for the iftar party in two hall rooms of the association at 4 pm on Thursday. At this time, banners and chairs-tables were vandalized in the hall room.

The Chief Justice was the chief guest at the Iftar party of the Supreme Court Bar. However, he did not appear there amid the opposing positions of the lawyers of both sides. Even a judge of the High Court and Appellate Division did not attend the Iftar party.

On Thursday around 4:30 pm, when the Interim Committee (Ad Hoc Committee) of the Samiti entered the Hall No. 2 of the Samiti and pulled their Iftar banner, a group of lawyers took away their banner. At that time, there was a scuffle and chase between the two sides. At the same time, BNP-backed lawyers marched into the hall with black flags. This again caused tension between the lawyers of both sides.

At one stage chairs-table-plates were thrown away and vandalized. Then the lawyers of both sides entered the hall number 1 of the association. The chairs and tables of the iftar party were broken by their chase. After that, from 4:30 p.m., lawyers from both sides protested at the Samiti building.

Lawyers from both sides staged a protest at the Supreme Court bar building till iftar. Around 5:30 p.m., BNP supporters sat in front of the Lawyers' Association building.

Former Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik alleged that he was prevented from participating in the Iftar party. Pro-BNP lawyers behave aggressively.

On the other hand, members of the Interim Committee (Ad Hoc Committee) of the Association, led by the Member Secretary Shah Ahmed Badal, stayed on the ground floor in front of the Supreme Court Lawyers' Association building. They break fast there.

Later, some lawyers who did not wish to be named said that in the recently concluded election, BNP presidential candidate Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon led a protest march around the pre-arranged Iftar organized by Awami League and attacked the Iftar.
