UP election: 148 Awami League, three JP and 49 independent candidates elected

Dhaka, June 23: In the first phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections, 148 candidates of Awami League (28 uncontested and 120 contesting), three from the opposition Jatiya Party, three from Jatiya Party (JP), one from Islami Andolan Bangladesh and 49 independents has been elected as chairman unofficially. The BNP, one of the chief opposition parties in the country, boycotted this election.

EVM elections were held in 20 out of 204 UPs in 41 upazilas of 13 districts on Monday, June 21. The rest were held by ballot.

As there were no contesting candidates before the election, 28 Awami League candidates won, according to information received by the Election Commission (EC) from the field.

Two people have been killed in violence in the first round of elections. One person was killed in a clash between two groups outside the center in Ward No. 5 of Hazariganj Union in Char Fashion Upazila of Bhola.

Also, a man was killed in a clash between supporters of an opposition candidate over the arrest of a man for allegedly casting a fake vote at Kamalapur Primary School in Ward 9 of Khanjapur Union in Gournadi Upazila of Barisal District.
