US technical assessment team arrives in Dhaka for election observation

Dhaka, Dec 25: A five-member delegation of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) of the United States research institute is staying in Bangladesh to observe the 12th National Assembly elections to be held on January 7.

The delegation will stay in Bangladesh for six to eight weeks. This was stated in a press release published on IRI's website on Sunday. A delegation of 12 members of IRI and NDI will stay in Dhaka to observe the election. Five of them are election analysts.

According to the notification, a joint delegation of IRI and NDI arrived in Bangladesh last week. The delegation will monitor and assess the violent situation before, during and after the January 7 elections. Those who have received approval from the Election Commission of Bangladesh and will stay in Bangladesh for six to eight weeks. The delegation will conduct a thematic analysis of various forms of electoral violence. These include violence due to internal party conflicts, inter-party violence, violence against women and other marginalized groups, online harassment and threats. The US delegation will also see the role of state institutions in dealing with these violence. Besides, the delegation will present an evaluation report on electoral violence after the election process with constructive recommendations to reduce violence in the next elections.

Earlier, a delegation consisting of NDI and IRI visited Bangladesh from October 8 to 11 to assess the pre-election situation.
