Dhaka, March 17: The government has various initiatives to increase the production of Hilsa. Due to these initiatives, the officials of the Fisheries Department think that the production of Hilsa is having a positive impact every year.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the Department of Fisheries, the government has taken various measures to increase the production of hilsa, including ban on catching hilsa during the 6-month jatka and breeding season, establishment of sanctuaries, observation of jatka conservation week, 75 days fishing at sea, and special combing operations.

Food assistance is provided under VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) for the survival of coastal fishermen during the prohibition of hilsa harvesting and catching jatka during the main breeding season.

According to the Department of Fisheries, hilsa fish smaller than 10 inches or 25 centimeters (from the beak to the tip of the tail) are called jatka.

Jatka is banned for 6 months from November to June every year. The law is being strictly enforced to protect hilsa. Assistance is being provided to those who do not catch jatka or refrain from fishing during the prohibited period. To protect mother hilsa, fishing is completely banned for 22 days. There are 6 sanctuaries of Hilsa in the country. They are managed. If you catch hilsa (jatka) below 10 inches, you will be punished.

The government is providing alternative employment to fishermen who refrain from catching jatka. This has improved the socio-economic condition of the fishermen. Alternative employment materials such as rickshaws / vans, goat rearing (2), sewing machines, cow fattening, small business, net supply, poultry rearing, making tree saplings, vegetable gardens and cage fish farming equipment Being able to make a living.

On the basis of lunar month, for the main breeding season, every year in the month of Ashwin, from the first four days of the first full moon to the next 18 days, including the full moon day, a total of 22 days of hilsa are forbidden. At this time, fish ghats, warehouses and hat-bazaars were raided all over the country.
