Village police member engaged in guarding polling centre found dead

Dhaka, Jan 6: A village police member, who was in charge of guarding a polling centre at Char Arkandi Government Primary School in Baliakandi Upazila of Rajbari, has been found dead.

The body was recovered from a garden next to the school on Saturday (December 6) early morning.

The deceased village police member has been identified as Ranjit Kumar Dey, the son of Shibendranath Dey of Char Arkandi village in Baliakandi. Police initially believe that he may have been strangulated to death.

According to police and local sources, Ranjit was engaged in guarding a polling station at Char Arkandi Government Primary School. At night he joined his duty with Yusuf Hossain, the night watchman of the school. Around 3:30 am, Ranjit went outside the school to urinate. But then he never came back. After half an hour passed Yusuf started looking for him. Then he called the headmaster of the school and the local UP member. Later, around 5 am, Ranjit's body was found in the bushes of the garden next to the school toilet.

Prothom Alo newspaper, quoting Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baliakandi Police Station, Alamgir Hossain, reported that initially, it is believed that Ranjit was strangled to death. The body was recovered and sent to Rajbari Sadar Hospital mortuary for autopsy. Investigation has been started into the incident.
