Voting to take place in 63 municipalities in third phase of polls

Dhaka, January 30: Voting will be held in 63 municipalities of the country in the third phase on Saturday. Voting will continue from 8 am to 4 pm. In the third phase, voting will be done through ballot papers in all the municipalities.

According to Election Commission (EC) Secretariat sources, 229 candidates are contesting for the post of mayor, 755 candidates for the post of reserved councilor and 2,360 candidates for the post of general councilor in 63 municipalities. A total of 3,344 candidates will contest in the third phase.

Besides, in the third phase, 37 candidates have already won without contest. Laksam in Comilla, Morelganj in Bagerhat and Tungipara in Gopalganj have won the mayoral post without contest. Apart from this, the candidates for 9 reserved councilor posts and 25 general councilor posts have also won without contest.

Members of BGB, RAB, police and Ansar have already taken to the field to control the law and order situation in the election. There will be 4 levels of security on polling day.

Besides, 63 Judicial Magistrates have been appointed in 63 municipalities for a total of 5 days. They will serve two days before the election, on election day and two days after the election.

The 63 municipalities that will be voted are Hakimpur in Dinajpur; Jaldhaka of Nilphamari; Ulipur in Kurigram; Gobindganj in Gaibandha; Dhunat, Shibganj, Gabtali, Kahalu and Nandigram of Bogra; Rahanpur in Chapainawabganj; Naogaon Sadar and Dhamairhat; Mundumala and Kesharhat in Rajshahi; Singra of Natore, Pabna Sadar; Chuadanga Sadar and Darshan; Harinakundu and Kotchandpur in Jhenaidah; Monirampur in Jessore, Sadar and Kalia in Narail; Morelganj in Bagerhat; Paikgachha of Khulna; Kalaroa in Satkhira; Sadar and Patharghata of Barguna; Borhanuddin and Daulatkhan of Bhola; Gournadi and Mehendiganj of Barisal; Jhalakathi Nalchiti; Swarupkathi of Pirojpur; Tangail Sadar, Mirzapur, Bhunapur, Sakhipur and Madhupur; Sarishabari in Jamalpur; Nakla and Nalitabari of Sherpur; Bhaluka, Gauripur and Ishwarganj of Mymensingh; Durgapur in Netrokona; Katiadi of Kishoreganj; Munshiganj headquarters; Pangsha of the palace; Tungipara in Gopalganj; Naria, Vedharganj and Jajira of Shariatpur; Golapganj and Zakiganj of Sylhet; Moulvibazar Sadar; Baruda and Chauddagram of Comilla; Hajiganj of Chandpur; Feni Sadar; Hatia and Chaumuhani of Noakhali; And Ramganj in Laxmipur.

Polling in Pabna's Sujanagar municipality has been postponed on Thursday.

In the first phase out of 329 municipalities of the country, EVM voting was held on 28 December in 24 municipalities. In the second phase, voting took place in 60 municipalities on January 16.
