18.5% voter turnout till 12 pm, irregularities found in 37 centres: EC

Dhaka, Jan 7: The Election Commission (EC) has reported 18.5 percent voter turnout in the first four hours, from 8 am to 12 pm, during the 12th National Parliament elections.

EC Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam shared this information at a press conference held at the Agargaon Election Commission (EC) building on Sunday (Jan 7) afternoon.

Meanwhile, the EC has reported irregularities and chaos in 37 polling centres across the country during the polling on Sunday, while eight people have been detained in connection with the incidents.

The EC said this in a briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon in the morning.

In Barguna-1, a mobile court has sentenced a man to six months in jail for casting false votes.

The man, Sabet Hossain (28), was caught red handed at a polling centre in Barguna Sadar upazila.

Meanwhile, a mobile court has sentenced three activists of an Awami League nominated boat candidate to seven days in jail for obstructing voters from entering a polling station at Kolaidanga village in Meherpur Sadar Upazila.

The Awami League supporters are — Yunus Ali, Niamat Ali and Nazrul Islam.

In Gafargaon under Mymensingh-10 constituency, three people, including a presiding officer, have been arrested for irregularities at a polling station.

Presiding Officer Ilias Uddin, Assistant Presiding Officer Md. Nurul Haque and Awami League polling agent, Abul Kalam Azad, were caught while stuffing ballots in public at the Madinatul-ul-Alhaz Akbar Hossain Qawmi Madrasa polling centre around 10:30 am on Sunday.
