3 more arrested in New Market clash

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 5: RAB has arrested three more people in connection with the clash that took place in New Market area of the capital last month.

ASP ANM Imran Khan, Assistant Director of the Legal and Media wing at the RAB headquarters, said on Thursday (May 5) that a total of three people had been arrested from Shariatpur and Cox's Bazar in connection with the New Market clash and the killings of two people during the violent clashes. One of them were directly involved in the killings and remaining two were involved in inciting the violence.

Earlier, five students of Dhaka College were arrested in connection with the murder of delivery man Nahid during a clash between traders and students at New Market.

Five arrested students are-- 4th year student of Accounting Department of Dhaka College Abdul Qayyum (24), final year students of Sociology Department Palash Mia (24) and Mahmud Irfan (24), Faisal (24) of Bengali Department and Islam History and Culture Department's first year student Md. Junaid Bugdadi (19).

Earlier, DB chief AKM Hafeez Akhter confirmed the arrest at a press conference at DMP Media Center. He said that they have not been able to say anything clearly about the suspects Rabbi and Emon who have been publicized in various media. However, if they are arrested, it will be known whether they are directly involved in this incident or not.

He said analysis of video footage showed that Nahid had taken part in the clash on behalf of traders. He went ahead with an umbrella. He was later stabbed to death by some students. Five college students have been arrested in connection with the incident. All of them were wearing helmets. The five are believed to be directly and indirectly involved in the killings.

The students of Dhaka College clashed with the shop owners and employees of New Market on the night of April 18 and at noon on April 19. Nahid and Morsalin were killed and more than 50 people were injured in the clash. At least three cases have been filed in this regard.
