A tripartite agreement to be signed to bring Nepal's electricity to Bangladesh

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 18 August 2023: Tripartite agreement to supply electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh via India will be signed soon. It has already been agreed in principle to bring this electricity from Nepal mainly using Indian transmission lines. Once the agreement is completed, 40 MW of electricity from Nepal will transit through the Indian grid and enter Bangladesh. Indian media reported this information in a report on Thursday.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) officials said that there has been an agreement in principle to supply electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh through Indian transmission lines. They also said that a formal agreement will be signed between the three countries in this regard soon.

NEA spokesperson Suresh Bhattarai said that a verbal understanding has already been concluded between the three countries to export electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh. He said, in the first phase, an agreement has been reached regarding the export of 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh.

According to Bhattarai, there will be a formal agreement in this regard very soon.

According to the sources of Nepal Electricity Authority, Bangladesh is ready to buy 40 megawatt (megavolt) electricity from Nepal at the beginning. In this scenario, a formal agreement to supply electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh via India will be signed in a few weeks.

Prabal Adhikari, senior NEA official, said India is positive about supplying power from Nepal to Bangladesh using its transmission lines. He also said that it is not possible to supply electricity in this way without the consent of India.

Officials say some of the pending issues related to the contract are expected to be finalized soon. Besides, Bangladesh is also planning to buy 9 thousand megawatts of electricity from Nepal in the long term.
