Dhaka, Sept 6: State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said that Bangladesh's potential electricity generation capacity will be around 60,000 MW by 2041.

He said, currently the total power generation capacity in the country is 28,134 megawatts.

The State Minister shared this information in response to a written question of M. Abdul Latif in the National Parliament on Tuesday.

He said that currently 1,195 megawatts of total electricity is being generated from renewable sources. According to the Prime Minister's announcement, 40 percent of electricity must be produced from renewable energy sources by 2041. Keeping this goal in mind, the power department is undertaking various projects in government and private initiatives.

He said that by 2041, the potential power generation capacity will be around 60,000 megawatts. In that case, 24,000 megawatts of electricity will be required from the renewable sector. At present, the total number of ongoing, in-process and planned projects for power generation from renewable energy is 108. The projects are expected to connect 10,129 MW of electricity to the national grid by 2030.

The state minister said that the formulation of Solar Irrigation Roadmap (2023-31) with the help of ADB is in the final stage. Under the roadmap, 45,000 diesel-powered pumps will be converted into solar-powered pumps. About 1000 MW of electricity will be produced through this.

In response to a question from Jatiya Party MP Syed Abu Hossain Babla, the state minister said that the demand for electricity is constantly changing. At present the demand is about 15,000 MW. He said that so far on April 19, maximum 15,648 megawatts of electricity has been produced.
