Dhaka, November 27: The port authorities have taken various steps to modernize and increase the capacity of Mongla, the second largest seaport in the country. Six different types of vessels are being purchased at a cost of Tk 767 crore to facilitate the work of the port.

These vessels will be procured under the project titled 'Upgradation of Mongla Port'. The process of inviting international tenders for the second time to hire consultants as an initial step in the purchase of the vessel is underway. If all goes well, the ships could be anchored at Mongla port by the end of 2021, authorities said.

The vessels purchased will include a pilot mother vessel, two tugboats, a SARS and rescue vessel, a survey and research vessel, and a boiling vessel. Preliminary process has already been completed for the purchase of these ships. Authorities also once called for an international tender to hire a shipbuilding consultant. However, the tender was canceled due to various reasons. The official process for tendering is underway again.

Of this, the purchase of pilot mother vessel will cost Tk 191.28 crore. If this ship is connected to the port, it will be easier to bring pilots, sailors and crew from mother vessel to the shore.

This ship can be used to intensify patrols for the security of the port. It will be easier for sailors, crew, pilots and ship crews to come to mother vessel from the shore or port.

The cost of buying two tugboats is estimated at Rs 233.38 crore. When the tugboats are connected to the two ports, it will be easier to moor the ships in the port. It will be easier to anchor. The boat will be used to pull the mother vessel off the propeller and to help pull the wrecked ship and other ships.

The purchase of a rescue vessel, i.e. SARS and rescue vessel, will cost Tk 113.44 crore. This modern ship can be used to find the wrecked ship at sea and rescue the sailors, crew and crew of the wrecked ship. The port authorities hope that the activities of this ship will reduce the damage to the ship affected by storms, floods and other natural calamities.
