Dhaka, March 24: Bangladesh has stood by Sri Lanka like a true friend in times of danger. Dhaka has supported Colombo against the western countries. Bangladesh voted against the resolution in favor of Sri Lanka during a vote at the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday (March 23rd).

There were 22 votes in favor of the resolution. Which includes countries in Europe and South America and South Korea from Asia. There were 11 votes against, including Bangladesh. Eleven countries did not vote.

A total of seven countries, including Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, presented the resolution to the Human Rights Council.

Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan are members of the Human Rights Council from South Asia.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh and Pakistan voted against Sri Lanka but India and Nepal did not participate. In this case, not voting means giving tacit consent to the resolution.

Asked about this, a foreign ministry official said Bangladesh has always supported its neighbors in various international forums. Not only this time, in 2013, when many countries expressed reluctance to attend the Commonwealth Summit in Colombo, Bangladesh worked for Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Dhaka on 19 March on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary and the golden jubilee of independence. Bangladesh agreed to support Sri Lanka in the Human Rights Council during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A joint statement issued after Rajapaksa's visit said.

Speaking at a press conference on Rajapaksa's visit on March 20, the foreign minister said the two prime ministers reiterated their commitment to enhance ongoing cooperation between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in various international forums, including the United Nations.
