BGB-BSF meeting to discuss border killings among 10 issues

Dhaka, December 23: The 51st Director General level border conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Border Security Force (BSF) of India has started in Guwahati, India, on 10 issues, including stopping border killings. The conference started at 3 pm on Tuesday. The conference will be formally concluded on December 25 with the signing of the Joint Record of Discussions (JRD).

An 11-member Bangladesh delegation led by BGB Director-General Major General Md. Safinul Islam participated in the conference.

Among the topics discussed at this year's conference are:

Protesting against the firing and wounding/killing of unarmed Bangladeshi nationals at the border and stopping such activities.

Prevention of smuggling of various types of illicit drugs from India to Bangladesh including Yaba, Phensedyl, Alcohol, Cannabis, Heroin and Viagra/Senegra.

In addition, various drug/drug factories/warehouses, including Phensedyl in India and prevention of drug smuggling, exchange of information on drug traffickers.

Exchange of information about arms traders from India to prevent arms and ammunition smuggling to Bangladesh and arms smuggling.

Prevention of border crossings/illegal crossings/infiltration by BSF and Indian nationals.

Not to carry out development work without permission from India within 150 yards of the border and to resolve other development works in Bangladesh as soon as possible.

Implement river bank conservation work in the border areas of both the countries.

To take necessary steps to get permission to use the Indian part of the Padma River to facilitate the movement of local people in Char Mazardia and Char Khanpur areas of Rajshahi border.

The conference will discuss 10 issues.

Exchange of information on the possible location of armed terrorist and regional separatist groups within the Indian border and the conduct of their activities.

Effective implementation of ‘Effective Integrated Border Management Plan’ for speedy resolution of border management and border related issues.

To take various initiatives to increase mutual trust and friendship.

Apart from senior BGB officials, the Bangladesh delegation to the conference also includes officials from the Prime Minister's Office, Home Ministry and Foreign Ministry.

On the other hand, a 12-member Indian delegation led by BSF Director General Rakesh Asthana participated in the conference.

The Indian delegation is comprised of senior officials from BSF headquarters, Frontier IGs and concerned officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs of India.
