Dhaka, September 10: Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) has started the re-excavation of the abandoned well number one of the gas field in Biyanibazar, Sylhet. The company expects to get five to seven million cubic feet of gas per day from this well.

In the meantime, seven to seven and a half million cubic feet of gas is being extracted daily from well number two. Bapex Managing Director Mohammad Ali inaugurated the excavation work of abandoned well number one of the gas field in Biyanibazar on Saturday (September 10) at noon.

Managing Director of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited Md. Mizanur Rahman said, we expect the re-excavation of this well to be completed within a month. After that production can be started. We expect the well to produce five to seven million cubic feet of gas per day. But it cannot be said with certainty before the excavation is completed.

There are five gas fields under Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL). These are Haripur Gas Field, Rashidpur Gas Field, Chatak Gas Field, Kailastila Gas Field and Biyanibazar Gas Field. Among them is the abandoned Chatak gas field. The remaining 12 wells are currently producing 91 million cubic feet of gas per day.

After investigation, it is known that gas extraction started in 1991 from well number one of Biyanibazar gas field. Gas extraction was stopped in 2014. Mining started again in 2016 but stopped again at the end of that year. The well was abandoned since early 2017.

Recently, BAPEX conducted exploration in that well. It can be seen that there is still gas in the well. In this context, new excavations have started.
