Dhaka, February 11: Eligibility of candidates for recruitment of teachers in public universities is being determined. The university authorities will have to appoint teachers through merit verification among those qualified candidates. At the same time, it has been decided to extend the leave period of teachers. A directive in this regard will be issued this month to implement it, University Grants Commission (UGC) sources said.

Recently, a tripartite meeting of Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, UGC and public university teacher leaders was held. The meeting sources said that a decision was taken on these issues there.

However, a university authority can determine the qualifications of a candidate if it so desires, but no one can be appointed below the minimum qualifications of a candidate given by the government. In this case the result of SSC and HSC of the candidate will not be evaluated. CGPA will be given importance in Honors and Masters results. At these two levels, a policy decision has been taken to set the total CGPA at 7 (3.5 each).

He said, "It is being implemented from the idea of hiring teachers on merit basis in the greater interest of ensuring quality education in 46 public universities." At the same time, teachers are being given five years instead of the current four years for masters, MPhil and PhD degrees as higher education at home and abroad, he said.

Asked about this, Deputy Minister of Education Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury told Jago News, "We have reached a decision after discussing with the teachers' leaders of public universities more than once. The matter will be officially announced in the next two weeks.
