Cyclone Yaas causes Tk 3.5 crore loss to educational institutions across country

Dhaka, June 15: Various educational institutions in Bagerhat district have been most affected by the impact of Yaas. Cyclone Yaas, which formed in the north-west Bay of Bengal, hit the Indian coast on May 26. As a result, the coastal areas of Bangladesh were swept away by tidal waves and heavy rains. This caused a total loss of Tk 3 crore 59 lakh to 187 educational institutions of the country. Besides, several institutions have been completely destroyed in the tidal wave.

Officials at the Department of Secondary and Higher Education (Maushi) said 125 educational institutions in six districts of Barisal and Khulna divisions were damaged.

The districts are Jhalokati, Bhola, Patuakhali, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat. The worst affected are 30 educational institutions in Bagerhat and 26 in Patuakhali. Most of the damaged educational institutions are in chars. As a primary, these educational institutions have lost about 2 crore 97 lakh 32 thousand taka.

Professor (Administration) of Mausi, Professor Shahedul Khabir, said that the information about the damage caused by the cyclone was obtained from the field. We are checking and sorting them out. The amount and amount of damage was determined and sent to the Ministry of Education. After approval from the Ministry of Education, it was reformed through the Department of Education Engineering.

"Every year we have a dedicated fund to deal with special disasters," he said. "There is even money for renovation work. With the approval of the ministry, renovation work was started in the damaged educational institutions."

Meanwhile, officials of the Department of Primary Education (DPE) said that a total of 62 schools in Chittagong, Barisal and Khulna divisions were affected by the cyclone. Initially, the information was sent to the Department of Primary Education by the Thana, Upazila and District Field Officers.

They also said that according to the details, damage amounting to about 3 crore 60 lakh taka have been sustained. In Khulna division, more than 40 government schools have been damaged. The rest are government primary schools in Chittagong and Barisal divisions. Some of these have caused various types of damage including broken floor, cracks in the walls, damaged washrooms and tubewells and damaged chair-table furniture.
