EC explains how armed forces will help in elections

Dhaka, Dec 27: The Election Commission has revealed the points in which the armed forces will assist in making the 12th National Assembly elections fair and free. This information is known from the EC on Tuesday.

In response to the Election Commission's request to conduct free, fair, impartial and peaceful elections, armed forces have been asked to be deployed in all 300 constituencies of Bangladesh from January 3 to January 10 (excluding the travel period) in order to assist the local civil administration.

Teams deployed by the armed forces for the 12th National Assembly Elections 2024 will be conducted in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code and other legal provisions and provisions issued by the Ministry of Defence. The deployed armed forces will assist the civil administration in maintaining law and order in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code on the advice of the Executive Magistrate in electoral work.

The armed forces will help 1. Members of the armed forces will be deployed at nodal points and convenient locations in each district/upazila/metropolitan area; 2. Armed forces personnel will be deployed in the district/upazila/ police station in coordination with the returning officer; 3. The Executive Magistrate will be appointed by the Returning Officer along with the Electoral Armed Forces team and the proceedings will be taken according to law, rules and procedures; 4. According to the reality and requirements, other legal activities will be carried out as per the request of the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer & 5. A detailed plan will be drawn up including the duration of activities and deployment before and after polling day.

It was informed in the letter that in view of the discussion with the Election Commission for the appointment of armed forces in the National Assembly elections, vanguard/rekidi team can be sent for the purpose of collecting preliminary data on the communication system, physical infrastructure and electoral environment conditions of the electoral area before the election. It was requested to limit the rakyat groups. Detailed deployment guidelines for armed forces on the occasion of elections will be sent later. The activities related to the deployment of Armed Forces selection will be coordinated by the Department of Armed Forces.
