EC formation: Names given by Search Committee won't be disclosed

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 25: Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, who is also the acting secretary of the Search Committee, said the Search Committee has handed over 10 names to the President. A five-member Election Commission will be formed from there and a notification will be issued soon.

He said this while leaving Bangabhaban at 8 pm. on Thursday.

The cabinet secretary said, "We have given the names to the President. The names proposed by the Search Committee will not be disclosed. The President will form the commission in a day or two."

He said the President will look at the names and determine the five, and it will be issued in the form of notification soon.

Earlier, the members of the Search Committee entered Bangabhaban one by one from 7 pm with the names of the final 10 candidates for the post of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.

On January 5, a six-member Search Committee was formed under the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022 and a notification was issued by the Cabinet Division.

The Search Committee had sought proposals from political parties for the post of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. For the posts, 322 names had been proposed. Later, the committee held several meetings with eminent citizens of the country. After a few meetings, the 10 names were finalized.
