Eid-ul-Azha: 1 Crore 41 thousand animal sacrifices across country

Dhaka, July 1: This year, a total of 1 crore 41 thousand 812 cattle were sacrificed in the holy Eid-ul-Azha. Ten percent of this can be skin damage. Besides, the target of collection of 85 to 90 lakh pieces of good quality leather has been set this time, excluding goat skin.

These skins are being bought from seasonal traders and madrasas at a higher price than last time. The Chairman of Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) Md. Shaheen Ahmed has claimed that the information that leather prices are not matching is a rumor.

He said these things to Jago News on Friday afternoon. Shaheen Ahmed said, we have made all kinds of preparations to preserve 85 to 90 lakh skins. Many have complained that seasonal traders and madrasas are not getting the desired price for raw hides. When asked about this, the BTA chairman said, "I bought most of the leather from the madrasa. I don't remember buying any leather for less than Tk 700. I even paid the price of leather up to Tk 900. Besides, salt and labor cost for one skin is Tk 300. All in all we are trying our best."

He said, "We usually do not buy leather on the day of Eid. Some raw hides are being collected from different mosques and madrassas. In the next few days we will start collecting the salted skins."

Some say that the price of leather is low this year, much like the price of water. When asked about this, Shaheen Ahmed said that a man showed up who did not get the price of the leather. The image of the entire country cannot be matched with the price of a few pieces of leather.

Meanwhile, Aftab Khan, president of Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchant Association (BHSMA), said that more heat and more rain both create obstacles in the preservation of raw hides. Heat and rain are enemies of rawhide. This time, there is more rain during Eid-ul-Adha and when the rain decreases, the Vapsa is looking hot. This can result in 10 percent skin loss. However, more than this will spell disaster for traders.
