Dhaka, November 3: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said that the Election Commission is embarrassed by the increasing violence in the Union Parishad (UP) elections. The CEC said this in response to a question from reporters at the Election Building in Agargaon on Tuesday (November 2) afternoon.

The CEC said, "It is true that the incidence of election violence is increasing. We have witnessed it. I am thinking about what kind of instructions need to be given in the field regarding the election. Hope to have a detailed discussion tomorrow Thursday. Many things have happened. Which we are embarrassed about. To control that, we will discuss with the commissioners and give directions in the field."

"We have control," he said in response to a question, adding, "But if there is no tolerance in the field, then it is not possible to control. We have repeatedly said that elections will be competitive, competitive, but not vindictive. We want to inform you that the violent incidents that are taking place in the elections must be controlled through the efforts of all."

In response to another question from reporters, the CEC said, "We do not take action as soon as the complaint is received. But if there is an immediate criminal incident, we can't do anything about it. These are not pre-planned or the administration may not know in advance. We have strict guidelines on how to control criminal incidents on the ground."

Asked by reporters whether he sees the role of political parties as positive, the CEC said, "We are not looking at it very positively. Sad but true. Political parties need to play an active role in these matters. The issue of elections is not just the Election Commission, it is everyone. We are just in the management. So if they are more proactive, these will come down even more."
