Fear of deteriorating flood situation in 10 districts

Dhaka, August 31: The water of six rivers is flowing over the danger line at 13 points. In this context, the flood situation is expected to deteriorate in 10 districts of the north, north-central and central regions of the country, according to a report of rainfall and river condition from Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of Bangladesh Water Development Board on Monday (August 30).

According to the forecast, the water level of Brahmaputra river is increasing. On the other hand, the water level of Jamuna river is stable. The water level of both the rivers may rise in the next 48 hours. According to the report, the water level of the river Ganga has decreased, while the water level of the river Padma is increasing. This rising water level may continue for the next 24 hours.

With the exception of Manu and Khowai in the Upper Meghna Basin in the northeast of the country, the water levels of major rivers are declining, which may continue for the next 48 hours, the report said.

It further said that flood situation in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Tangail, Sirajganj, Pabna, Manikganj, Rajbari and Faridpur districts could worsen in the next 24 hours.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center further said that water was flowing over the danger line at eight points of the river Jamuna. 10 cm at Fulchhari point; 14 cm at Bahadurabad point; 32 cm at Sariakandi point; 31 cm at Kazipur point; 34 cm at Sirajganj point; seven cm at Porabari point; six cm at Mathura point; Water is flowing over five cm at Oricha Point.

Meanwhile, water is flowing over the Goalanda point of the Padma River at 46 cm above the danger level. On the other hand, water is flowing over 40 cm of danger level at Baghabari point of Atrai river. The water is flowing at 45 cm above the danger level at Elasin point of Dhaleshwari river. Meanwhile, water is flowing over 34 cm at Kurigram point of Dharla river.

Abu Saeed, executive engineer of Jamalpur Water Development Board, told Jago News that in the last 24 hours, the water level of Jamuna river in Jamalpur has risen and is flowing at 12 cm above the danger level. More water may rise in the next three days. However, after the 1st, the water will start to decrease again, he said.

The water of Brahmaputra is rising and flowing over 26 cm of danger zone. As a result, at least 35,000 families in these areas have been inundated. Several thousand hectares of land in the low-lying areas have been submerged with aman, vegetable fields and aman seedbeds.
