First count of third gender in census

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 28: In 1974, the first census was conducted in Bangladesh. After that, a total of six censuses (1981, 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2022) were conducted. However, this is the first time that third gender people have been officially included in the list. They took another step forward in implementing the long-standing demand of the third gender people to get evaluation in all fields by the nation.

The preliminary report of the first digital Population and Housing Census 2022 implemented through BBS under the Department of Statistics and Information Management was released on Wednesday (July 27) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the city.

According to the report, the total population of the country is now 16 crore 51 lakh 58 thousand 616, where 8 crore 17 lakh are men, 8 crore 33 lakh women, and 12,629 people are of the third gender.

Of the 12,629 third gender people, 4,577 live in Dhaka Division. The least in Sylhet. Among other divisions, 563 of them live in Barisal division, 2,026 in Chittagong, 1,148 in Khulna, 972 in Mymensingh, 1,574 in Rajshahi and 929 in Rangpur.
