Gazette published increasing electricity price by 5%

Dhaka, January 13: The retail price of electricity at the consumer level in the country increased by 5 percent. The new price of electricity will be effective from this month (January). The government on Thursday issued a gazette increasing the price.

The government hiked electricity prices for the first time through an executive order under the authority of the revised Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Ordinance. The government is empowered in the 'Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2022' to fix, refix and adjust the prices of fuel oil, electricity and gas at the consumer level without BERC in special cases. The ordinance was promulgated on December 1. The ordinance is now in the process of becoming law.

According to the gazette, under the power given in Section 34A of the 'Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003', the government in the public interest, Bangladesh Electricity Development Board, Rural Electricity Association under Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited, Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited , revised the retail price of electricity supplied by West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited and Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited and charges/fees for various electricity related services.

The price of electricity per unit of residential Life Line (up to 50 units of electricity users) customers has increased from 3 taka 75 paisa to 3 taka 93 paisa. Users up to 75 units will have to pay 4 taka 40 paisa per unit instead of existing 4 taka 19 paisa.

Apart from this, the price per unit of residential from 76 to 200 units increased from 5 taka 72 paisa to 6 taka 1 paisa, from 201 to 300 units increased from 6 taka 30 paisa per unit, from 301 to 400 units increased from 6 taka 34 paisa to 6 taka 66 paisa.

The users of residential units from 401 to 600 units will have to pay 10 taka 44 paisa instead of 9 taka 94 paisa per unit and users of more than 600 units will have to pay 12 taka 3 paisa instead of 11 taka 46 paisa.

In this case, earlier the demand charge was Tk 30 per month, now it has increased to Tk 35.
