Dhaka, February 23: A court has sentenced Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Mizanur Rahman Mizan to three years in prison and former ACC director Khandaker Enamul Basir to eight years in prison on charges of leaking information and bribery. Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-4 pronounced the verdict on Wednesday (February 23).

In Mizan's verdict, the judge said that charges have been proved against DIG Mizan under sections 165 (a) and 109 of the Penal Code. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment under section 165 (a) for committing similar offenses under two sections.

In Basir's verdict, the judge said that the charges against him have been proved under Section 161, Section, Money Laundering Act and Section 5 (2) of the ACC Act. He was sentenced to five years in prison and fined Tk 80 lakh under the Money Laundering Act. Besides, he was sentenced to three years imprisonment under section 161 of the Penal Code. Both sentences will run together.

On February 10, the court fixed the date for announcing the verdict after presenting the arguments of the state and the accused.

DIG Mizan was accused of abusing his power to conceal his marriage while he was Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). A general diary (GD) was also lodged at the airport police station against Mizanur for allegedly threatening and harassing a journalist.

He was then withdrawn in early January 2019 on charges of abusing women and attached to the police headquarters. On June 24 of the same year, the ACC filed a case against Mizanur on the charge of concealing assets and acquiring assets illegally. Its investigating officer was the then ACC director Khandaker Enamul Basir.

During the investigation of the case, DIG Mizan alleged that Enamul Bachir took a bribe of Tk 40 lakh from him to get rid of the allegation of illegal acquisition of assets. After the allegation, another director of the ACC removed Enamul Basir. Manjur Morshed was appointed as the investigating officer. A three-member team headed by Sheikh Md. Fanafilla was given the task of investigating the allegations of bribery.

Fanafilla filed the case against Mizan and Basir on July 16, 2019 at the ACC's integrated district office in Dhaka-1. He is also the investigating officer of the case. Then on January 19, 2020, the investigating officer of the case filed a charge sheet against the accused.
