Dhaka, July 18: Flyover construction is underway on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gorai industrial area of Mirzapur upazila. As a result, four-lane vehicles on the highway are coming out with one lane. Besides, passenger buses, cattle and goods trucks on Gorai-Sakhipur road are taking to the highway with U-turns. As a result, traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Tangail highway is gradually increasing. The situation was the same throughout the day on Saturday (July 17).

According to the police, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, the movement of Dhaka-bound livestock and goods trucks and Dhaka-bound northwestern passenger buses on the highway has increased several times. As a result, the normal speed of vehicles has decreased and traffic congestion has increased. They are regularly monitoring the traffic situation through the Watch Tower.

It is learned that vehicles ply on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in 26 northern and western districts including Tangail district. At least 25-30 thousand vehicles ply on this highway every day during normal hours. Every year during the Eid season the traffic increases several times. Due to the Eid procession, the traffic on the highway started increasing from Friday (July 16). On Saturday (July 17) it increased further.

Hundreds of trucks carrying cattle from the north and west are plying on this highway in different parts of the country including Dhaka. Vehicles are moving in one lane due to construction of flyover at the beginning of the highway. Four-lane vehicles came to the spot and moved in one lane, causing traffic jams.

Gorai Highway Police has built a watch tower to keep the traffic flowing normally. Besides, Gorai Highway and Mirzapur police are working at different places to avoid traffic jams on the highway. Tangail district police is alerting the drivers by setting up tents at different places on the highway and miking.

Highway Police Sergeant Rubel Hasan, who is in charge of the Watch Tower in the Gorai area, said the movement of passenger buses as well as animal vehicles on the highway has increased several times. Four-lane vehicles are coming in Gorai area and moving in one lane. Besides, the speed of vehicles on Gorai-Sakhipur road is decreasing while getting on the highway. As a result, traffic congestion is intensifying. They are fearing further increase in traffic on Sunday and Monday.
