Indian youth killed in BSF firing on border

Dhaka, June 17: An Indian youth named Gautam Barman (28) was killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.

Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Farooq shared the information. The incident took place in the border area of Dahgram of Patgram Upazila of Bangladesh and Mekhligonj Thana of India on Friday morning.

It is said that the deceased Gautam Burman was involved in cattle trafficking at the border. He was a resident of Phulkardavari area of Mekhligonj police station in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India. His father's name is Nipen Burman.

According to local sources, a group of 5 to 7 people from both the countries were trying to cross Indian cows through the border area of 101 Phulkardavari of India and Angorpota of Bangladesh of sub-pillar number 9 of DMP-1 main pillar of India-Bangladesh border on Friday morning. Gautam Burman was also in that group. At this time, members of the patrol team of Arjun camp of Raninagar 6 BSF battalion in Cooch Behar district fired at the cattle traffickers. Gautam Burman was shot and died on the spot. His body was taken to the Mathabhanga Hospital mortuary for post-mortem by Kuchlibari police station in India with the help of BSF.

Earlier, on the night of June 4 this year, two Bangladeshi cattle traffickers named Yusuf Ali (26) and Rabiul Islam (52) were killed at the Jagatber union border on the night of June 4 this year and Rabiul Islam (52) at the same union border on April 1.

51 Panbari Company Commander of BGB Nazrul Islam said, BSF Commander of Arjun Camp informed us about the death on the border. Wanted to know if the deceased person is Bangladeshi. We have found out that the deceased is not a Bangladeshi, but an Indian citizen.

AFM Ajmal Hossain Khan, captain of 51 BGB's Rangpur battalion, said, "I have heard the matter. We have no affiliation with it."
