Dhaka, September 10: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said that the release period of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will be extended once again if the relatives apply.

On Saturday (September 10), the Law Minister gave this information in response to questions from journalists after inaugurating the training course for joint district and session judges or equivalent judicial officers at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital.

When asked whether the release period given to Khaleda Zia in the executive power of the government will be extended or not, the minister said, "I am waiting for their application. If they apply, the period of release will definitely increase."

Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018 by Dhaka's Special Court No. 5 established at Bakshibazar Alia Madrasa Ground.

After the verdict, Khaleda Zia was detained in the old central jail on Nazimuddin Road in Old Dhaka. Later on October 30 of that year, the High Court increased her sentence by five years to 10 years on appeal in the same case. After the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, the government temporarily released her in an executive order on March 25, 2020, in view of the family's request. Since then her release period has been extended five times in total.

According to the terms of the extended period, during this period Khaleda Zia will receive treatment from her residence in Dhaka and will not be able to go outside the country.

Finally, on March 23, Khaleda Zia's sentence was suspended and the release period was extended by six months under the previous two conditions. After that, a notification was issued by the Security Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs extending the period of release.
