Local government polls will be participatory without party symbols: EC

Dhaka, Jan 24: The Election Commission (EC) has announced the full schedule of by-elections for the general and various vacancies of local government city corporations, district councils, municipalities and union councils. The Election Commission (EC) believes that these elections will be more participatory if there are no party symbols.

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Jahangir Alam gave this information in a press conference at Agargaon Election House in the capital on Wednesday (January 24).

He said that on the same day on March 9, 233 polls will be held continuously from 8 am to 4 pm.

However, the schedule will be slightly different in the case of Zilla Parishad polls. On the other hand, the general election of city corporation, municipality, district council will be held by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). The rest will be voted by ballot.

Jahangir Alam said that in the light of the decision of the Election Commission, 223 general and by-elections will be held on March 9. Out of this, one city corporation, four city corporation vacancies, three municipal general posts, 15 municipal by-elections, 13 union council general elections and 190 different by-elections, 7 district council vacancies - a total of 233 elections will be held.
