One killed, another on life support in Dhaka New Market clash

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 20: One person, who was seriously injured in the clash between shopkeepers and students in Dhaka New Market and was on life support, has died later at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Dr. Md. Alauddin, a resident doctor at the emergency department of DMC Hospital, said the person died at 9:40 pm on Tuesday (April 19).

The deceased has been identified as Nahid Hossain (20). He was a deliveryman of D-Link Courier Service. He lived in Kamrangir Char. He got married six months ago. Dr. Alauddin has confirmed this information.

Dr. Alauddin said, "There is another person named Morsalin who is currently on life support. Besides him, two more are undergoing treatment at DMC. The other two are student Kanan Chowdhury and a shop's employee Yasin."

The deceased's aunt Monika said, "Nahid was going to the D-Link Courier Service's Elephant Road office as usual. He was beaten to death on the way."

Dahlia Akhter, wife of the deceased, said Nahid was injured in the clash in New Market area. He came to work from his home in Kamrangir Char Dewan Bari area in the morning. Later on social media, she got the news of her husband Nahid's admission to the hospital.

Md. Bachchu Mian, in-charge (inspector) of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said one person was killed in a clash in the New Market area. He was rushed to the emergency department of DMCH in critical condition and was pronounced dead at around 9.45 pm.

Meanwhile, it was claimed that more than two hundred students of Dhaka College were injured in the clash. The injured students were given first aid at the college teachers' auditorium. Doctors from Dhaka College, members of Dhaka College Rover Scout Group and Red Crescent gave first aid to the injured students.

The incident started on Monday (April 18) at around 12 am. At that time, shopkeepers started clashing with Dhaka College students in New Market area, which lasted till 2.30 am. Police brought the situation under control by removing the two sides from the area at midnight.

At that time, the students informed that two post-grads students of Dhaka College went to New Market for shopping around 12 midnight. They had a verbal spat with the shopkeepers while shopping.

At one stage, two students were reportedly stabbed. When the news spread on the campus, a group of students of Dhaka College went to New Market area. Later clashes broke out between businessmen and students.
