Padma Bridge: Asphalt paving starts

Dhaka, July 14: The work of paving the road of Padma bridge has started. Starting from the Jazira end of the bridge, the pitch casting work is progressing towards the Mawa end.

Dewan Mohammad Abdul Quader, Executive Engineer (Main Bridge) of the Padma Bridge, confirmed that the work of paving the roads at Span 40 and 41 on the Jajira side of the bridge has started from Tuesday (July 13).

He said that on the first day, on Tuesday, the 60-meter-long and 10-meter-wide part of the bridge was paved. Once the asphalt is cast, the car will be able to move.

Earlier, the work of laying the railway slab of the bridge was completed on July 20. The installation of 2,959 railway slabs was completed on the bridge.

According to the Padma Bridge project, 94 percent progress has been made till June 30. The overall progress of the Padma Bridge project is 87 percent.

It may be mentioned that the construction work of Padma Bridge started in December 2014. The Padma Bridge became visible on September 30, 2016 with the installation of the first span on poles 37 and 38. After installing 41 spans of 150 meters length on 42 pillars one by one, the 6.15 km long Padma bridge became fully visible on December 10, 2020.

At the same time other works, including laying of roadways and railway slabs, are going on. The work of laying railway slabs was completed on June 20. The main shape of the bridge is two storeys. China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC), a Chinese contractor, is working on the main bridge, and Sino Hydro Corporation, another company in the country, is working on river governance. Abdul Momen Limited of Bangladesh has constructed two connecting roads and infrastructure.

The structure of the bridge is being constructed with concrete and steel. The bridge, built at a cost of about Tk 30,193 crore, is expected to be operational in June next year.
