Peter Haas asks for meeting with 3 political parties

Dhaka, Nov 14: US Ambassador to Dhaka Peter Haas has requested a meeting with the senior leaders of the three main political parties on the issue of upcoming elections in Bangladesh. On Monday (November 13), the spokesperson of the US Embassy in Dhaka, Stephen Ebelli, gave this information in a statement. The parties are - Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party (JP).

The statement said, "The United States wants free and fair elections in a peaceful manner. The United States calls on all parties (political parties) to refrain from violence and exercise restraint. The embassy reiterated in a statement that the United States does not support any political party."

Regarding dialogue, the statement said, "The United States calls on all parties to engage in dialogue without preconditions. The statement recalled the visa policy announced by the US for Bangladesh. In this context, it has been said that the visa policy of the United States (TRC) will be effective against those who undermine the democratic election process."

Meanwhile, Jatiya Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu said that apart from the letter, politics and various issues were discussed with the US Ambassador Peter Haas. He said, apart from the letter, contemporary politics and various issues were discussed. They are unofficial.

Chunnu said these things after a meeting with Peter Haas at the office of the Jatiya Party chairman in Banani on Monday. He said, political issues have been discussed, they are unofficial. There was an exchange of views, a courtesy call. Besides, there have been many talks.

Chunnu also said that the US ambassador originally brought a letter written by their Assistant Minister for Central and South Asian Affairs, Donald Lue. He handed over the letter to our party chairman.

Jatiya Party Chairman Ghulam Mohammad Quader read the letter sent by the US Ambassador and told everyone present in the meeting, Chunnu said. He said that the US government wants to see free, fair and impartial elections here (Bangladesh) as mentioned in the letter.
