Dhaka, September 7: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed all concerned to be ready for the floods in view of the abnormal rise in water levels in the rivers. The directive was given at a regular cabinet meeting chaired by her.

The Prime Minister participated in the virtual meeting via video conference from Ganobhaban and the Cabinet members from the Secretariat. Later, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam briefed reporters about the meeting at the Secretariat.

He said the floods were discussed in an unscheduled discussion at today's meeting. Flood levels are rising, especially in the Jamuna and Padma basins. That is why they have been asked to be ready. The Minister of State for Disaster Management briefed them on their various programs to deal with such situations.

Khandaker Anwarul Islam said the Prime Minister had asked the Agriculture Minister to keep a transplant aman (T-aman) net ready in case of any difficulty in aman cultivation. "We are ready," he said. "Hopefully, there will be no problem in this case due to floods."

The Secretary further said that the Agriculture Minister informed that the Prime Minister had instructed him to be ready for the areas where water level has risen, especially where the Jamuna and Padma have joined together after Goalanda. If water comes in any area in the month of Bhadra and if there is tide in the Bay of Bengal, then the water is delayed. In that case, if there is any difficulty in aman cultivation, the Prime Minister has advised to keep T-aman net ready.

The cabinet secretary said the agriculture minister had said that aman had been cultivated in 60 lakh acres of land but 57 lakh acres had already been cultivated. They are close to the target.
