Dhaka, September 3: After a hiatus of one and a half years, due to the coronavirus pandemic, primary, secondary and higher secondary schools are likely to reopen on September 12. Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni told a news channel on Thursday that holidays are unlikey to be extended.

"Experts believe that the rate of [Covid-19] infection has begun to decline. It will decrease further in the coming days. As a result, experts believe that there will be no need to extend the holiday after September 11. As a result, if we want, we can open the educational institution from September 12, if there is no big problem in it. Proper monitoring will also be ensured if the educational institution is opened," the lawmaker said.

Speaking about the jabs, she said, "Arrangements have been made to vaccinate 18-year-old students. The vaccine is being provided in stages up to the age of 12 [and higher], subject to the availability of doses."

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took part in a discussion on the mourning motion for the death of MP Hasibur Rahman Swapan in the second session of the 14th session of the 11th National Assembly on Thursday. She said, "I have instructed to open the school-college. Arrangements are also being made to vaccinate teachers as well as family members of those working in educational institutions."

The Prime Minister said, "We are taking steps to vaccinate our school children in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization. For which some Pfizer vaccines have already arrived in the country. More will arrive. We are trying to order more [Pfizer vaccine]."

Earlier, in the last announcement on August 26, the leave of the educational institution was extended by another term, till September 11. On the same day, the Education Minister said in her speech, "There is no opportunity to close more educational institutions. There is pressure from school-college and student-parents, even if it is opened, there is a risk of corona infection. If the overall infection rate falls below 10 percent, we want to open educational institutions."
