7 educational institutes closed at Ghumdhum amid heavy gunfire on Myanmar side of Tumbru border

Dhaka, Jan 30: Firing has started again inside Myanmar at the Ghumdhum-Tumbru border of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban. Although there were no casualties in this incident, five government primary schools, one high school and one madrassa in the border area have been declared closed due to fear.

The chairman of Ghumdhum Union Parishad, Md. Jahangir Aziz, said that the firing has been going on since the morning of Monday, January 29, at the Ghumdhum-Tumbru border.

Locals said that the sound of gunshots and bombs could be heard intermittently inside Myanmar on Saturday. On Monday, the sound of gunfire was again heard inside Myanmar in Ward No. 1 Tumbru West Kul of Ghumdhum Union of Pillar No. 33 border.

Naikshyongchari Upazila Primary Education Officer Triratan Chakma told Dhaka Post that due to shelling inside Myanmar since morning, Bish Fandi Government Primary School, Vaja Bania Government Primary School, Tumbru Government Primary School, Paschim Kul Tumbru Government Primary School and South Ghumdhum Government Primary School in Dhumdhum border area were closed today. has been declared closed. The next decision will be taken when the situation is normal.

Meanwhile, Bandarban District Education Officer Muhammad Faridul Alam Hossaini told Dhaka Post that Ghumdhum High School and Mishkatun Nabi Dakhil Madrasa, located 100 yards from the border, have been temporarily closed due to shelling at the border.

Executive Officer (UNO) of Naikshyongchari Upazila Md. Jakaria said, "There is nothing to panic. If the local people leave their homes for safety and go elsewhere, the upazila administration will take necessary measures including relief assistance."
