Six die as chase-counter chase caps second phase of UP polls

Dhaka, November 12: At least six people were killed and hundreds were injured as chase-counter chase and violence capped the second phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections which took olace in different parts of the country. The dead included three in Narsingdi, and one each in Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Comilla. Voting ended at 4:00 pm.

Voting began at 8:00 am on Thursday (November 11) in 835 unions across the country. However, during the vote, there were incidents of forcible entry into the polling station, sealing of ballot papers, expulsion of agents of rival candidates and chases. Three people have been killed in election violence in Banshgari, a remote char area in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi. These isolated incidents took place in Banshgari area in the morning. Tensions are running high in the area over the incident.

One person was killed in a clash between supporters of a two candidates at Tetaiya Government Primary School in Ward 1 of Khurushkul Union in Cox's Bazar Sadar Upazila. The clash took place between activists and supporters of Sheikh Kamal and Abu Bakkar Siddique, two member candidates of the ward. An employee of Sheikh Kamal, identified as Putu, was killed in the incident. Besides, 6-7 more people were injured.

A man named Mohammad Shafi, 55, was killed in a clash between supporters of two UP member candidates at Fatikchhari in Chittagong. Several others were injured in the same incident. Three of them have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital. The rest are being treated at various local hospitals.

A young man named Shaon Ahmed (25) was killed in an attack by outsiders at a polling station in Meghna, Comilla. Four others were injured in the incident. The incident took place at Amirabad Government Primary School in Manikarchar Union of the upazila around 12:15 pm.

In the second phase of the country's tenth UP election, the schedule of 848 UPs was announced. But later a UP was dropped from the list. Seven UP votes were postponed. Besides, voting did not take place in five UPs due to lack of candidates and results were declared uncontested.

In the second phase, 81 people as chairman, 73 as reserved women members and 203 as general members were elected unopposed, according to information shared by EC Joint-Secretary SM Asaduzzaman.
