Two killed as mortar shells fired from Myanmar lands in Bandarban

Dhaka, Feb 6: A Bangladeshi woman named Hosne Ara (45) and a Rohingya named Nabi Hossain (65) were killed as mortar shells fired from Myanmar landed in Bandarban's Naikhongchhari.

A mortar shell reportedly fell on a kitchen in Jalpaitli village of Ghumdhum union of the upazila around 2:30 pm on Monday. The deceased Hosne Ara was the wife of Badsha Mia of Jalpaitli village. The dead Rohingya, Nabi Hussain, used to work at Badsha Mia's house.

In-charge (IC) of Ghumdhum police outpost Mahafuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan said two people were killed as mortar shells fired from Myanmar landed in the area.

Md. Anwan Hossain, Ward No. 5 member of Ghumdhum Union, said that they died on the spot while having lunch in the afternoon when their house was hit by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar.

After the incident RAB and police reached the spot.

Meanwhile, RAB-15 Cox's Bazar Media and Legal Aid (Additional Superintendent of Police) Abu Salam Chowdhury said that there has been tension in the border areas for the past few days. Two people were killed in mortar shells blasts from Myanmar.

He added that along with BGB, police and RAB are performing their duties at the border. However, their safety is under threat as the eager people come directly to the streets. Local people should be more cautious.
