Upazila polls to be held in 4 phases, first phase on May 4

Dhaka, Feb 7: The Election Commission (EC) has started preparations for the sixth Upazila Parishad elections. The election date has been fixed. Voting will be held in four phases. The first phase of voting will be held on May 4.

The commission meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Tuesday. EC Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam gave details after the meeting.

The secretary said that the sixth upazila parishad election will be held in four phases. This year, the first phase of upazila parishad elections will be held on May 4, the second phase will be held on May 11, the third phase will be held on May 18 and the fourth phase will be held on May 25. This year some other local government organizations have to be elected along with the Upazila Parishad elections. There are 495 Upazila Parishads across the country. Generally, elections are not held simultaneously in all upazilas. This selection is done in multiple steps. This time also selection will be done step by step.

According to the law, the upazila parishad must be elected within 180 days before the term of office is completed. Now 452 Upazila Parishads are eligible for election. Elections should be held in these upazilas by June. By March, almost all the upazilas, barring a few, will be eligible for elections.
