Uttara girder accident: 10 accused including crane operator placed on remand

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 20:The court granted the remand of ten people including the crane operator Md. Al-Amin Hossain alias Hriday (25) in the case of the death of five members of the same family when a girder fell on a car from the crane of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in the capital's Uttara.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed granted the remand after the hearing on Friday (August 19).

The police produced them in court on Friday. After that, the investigating officer of Uttara West Police Station, Police Inspector (Investigation) Yasin Ghazi appealed to the court for 10-day remand of Al-Amin, Rakib, and Zulfiqar for proper investigation of the case. At the end of the hearing, the judge placed them on four-day remand.

Besides, investigating officer of the case applied for a seven-day remand for Rubel (28), Md. Afroz Mia (50), Md. Iftekhar Hossain (39), Azharul Islam Mithu (45), Tofazzal Hossain alias Tushar (42), Ruhul Amin Mridha (33) and Md. Manjurul Islam (29). After the hearing, the judge remanded them for two days.

Earlier on Wednesday (August 17) night, they were arrested from Dhaka, Gazipur, Sirajganj, and Bagerhat.

The arrested accused are Crane operator Al-Amin Hussain alias Hriday, Rakib Hossain (23), Md. Rubel (28) and Md. Afroz Mia (50), trafficman of Four Brothers Guard Service which was engaged in safety at the accident site, Zulfikar Ali Shah (39), safety engineer of the contracting company, Md. Iftekhar Hossain (39), the proprietor of Ifscon Bangladesh Limited which was engaged in the delivery of heavy equipment, head of operation Azharul Islam Mithu (45), Tofazzal Hossain alias Tushar (42), marketing manager of crane supplier Build Trade Company, and administrative officer Ruhul Amin Mridha (33) and Md. Manjurul Islam (29).

Five passengers of a private car were killed when a girder fell from the crane of the BRT project in front of Paradise Tower in Uttara last Monday (August 15) around 4:30 pm. The newlyweds in the car were seriously injured but survived. The victims were returning after attending a wedding reception ceremony in Dhaka.
