Goods unloading resumed at Mongla port as Cyclone Sitrang weakens

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 26: The Meteorological Department has withdrawn danger signal number 7 from Mongla seaport as Cyclone Sitrang has weakened into a deep depression. At the same time, the port authority has lifted its own alert-3. However, Mongla is still under local warning number 3. Meanwhile, 20 hours after the cyclone's landfall, the operations of the port have been normal since Tuesday.

Loading and unloading of goods in 12 commercial ships including coal, fertilizer, and gas at the port have started in full swing.

Captain Shaheen Majid, Harbor Master of Mongla Port Authority, said that two foreign ships named 'Everest K' and Vega Stand' have entered the port after the disaster. These ships carry coal and fertiliser. Apart from this, three more commercial ships left the port after discharging the goods.

Earlier, due to the effect of Cyclone Sitrang, after the issuance of distress signal number 7, all activities were suspended from 9:00 pm on Monday, including the stoppage of cargo of all foreign ships stationed at Mongla port.

Mongla port user HM Dulal said that they have suffered a lot of financial loss due to not being able to redeem the goods. However, their workers resumed work from Tuesday morning.

Captain Mohammad Shaheen Majid, Harbor Master of Mongla Port Authority, said that due to Cyclone Sitrang, the loading and unloading of goods at Mongla Port was stopped for about 27 hours.

"However, there was no damage to the port in Sitrang," he said.

Meanwhile, according to the harbor department of the port, 11 commercial ships are staying at Mongla port till Tuesday morning. Out of this, 3 ships have left the port after discharging the goods. Two more ships will arrive at the port today to discharge the goods.
