Women and children among 13 killed in lighting strikes across Bangladesh

Dhaka, June 5: At least 13 people have been killed in lightning strikes across the country.

The deceased include five people from Bakshiganj of Jamalpur, three people, including a mother-son duo, in Chapainawabganj, one person in Sharankhola of Bagerhat, one person in Netrokona, two people in Sirajganj and one person in Birampur of Dinajpur. Several others were injured in these incidents.

According to reports from different districts, five people, including a woman, were killed in a lightning strike in Bakshiganj of Jamalpur on Friday. The incident took place in Merurchar Union around 4:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Harbadsha Mia, 50, son of Mofizal Haque of East Kalkihara village. Akija Begum, 30, wife of Abdul Khaleq of the same village; Khalilur Rahman, 55, son of Kala Miah of Bhati Kalkihara village; Ana Mia, 15, son of Abel Mia of Gamaria village in Dewanganj upazila; And Tazel Mandal, 40, son of Kazim Uddin of Melandah upazila.

Three people, including a mother and son, were killed in two separate lightning strike in Chapainawabganj on Friday. These incidents took place in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Annie Begum, 26, wife of Rana Ali of Panchrashia village under Sundarpur union of Sadar upazila, Her son Nur Mohammad (6); And Yamin Arafat, 10, son of Abdul Matin of Bakhar Ali village in Charbagdanga union. They all went to pick mangoes in the storm and died.

A farmer named Md. Abubakkar Khan (28) was killed in a lightning strike while fetching cows at Sharankhola in Bagerhat. The accident took place at Buri Math area of ​​Uttar Rajapur village in Rayenda union of the upazila on Friday afternoon.

A child named Asha Moni (7) was killed in a lightning strike in Netrokona's Purbadhala. At that time a woman named Selina Khatun (50) was burnt. She was rushed to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital. The incident took place at Bhabanipur village of Dhalamulgaon union of the upazila in the afternoon.

Two people were killed in a lightning strike at Ullapara in Sirajganj on their way home with paddy.

The incident took place in Bangala Union and Barapangasi Union of the upazila on Thursday evening. The deceased were identified as Selim Reza, 30, son of late Abdur Rahim of Parmoddaha village under Bangala union of the upazila. And Abdul Alim, 37, son of Lalchan Miah of Howrah village in Barapangasi union.

A young man named Badhan Roy (18), son of Narayan Chandra Roy, was killed by lightning while picking chillies in a field in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur. Five people were burnt in the incident. The incident took place at noon on Thursday in Chakdurga Ramsapur area of ​​Mukundpur union of the upazila.
